OpenAI forms team to assess ‘catastrophic risks‘ of AI
Elon Musk thinks AI is an existential threat to humanity. But Meta’s Chief AI Scientist Yann LeCun calls such fears “preposterous“.
Now OpenAI — the company behind some of the most advanced AI models and applications — is forming a new team to assess “catastrophic risks” associated with AI.
“As part of our mission of building safe AGI, we take seriously the full spectrum of safety risks related to AI, from the systems we have today to the furthest reaches of superintelligence,“ said the company in a blog post.
OpenAI wants to answer questions like how dangerous frontier AI systems can be when put to misuse, and how we can build safeguards against these threats.
The company will look at risk categories that include:
Chemical, biological, radiological, and nuclear (CBRN) threats
Autonomous replication and adaptation (ARA)

NYTimes: Google working hard to keep Apple out of the search business
Dominance doesn’t even begin to describe Google’s hold of the online search market. With over 90% of the online search engine market, competitors like Bing and Yahoo have had little to cheer for in recent years.
But with the recent developments in AI, newcomers like OpenAI and established players like Microsoft are trying to challenge Google’s dominance with competitors like ChatGPT web browsing and Bing AI.
But according to the NYTimes, AI isn’t the only front Google fears competition for its search business. The company reportedly paid Apple $18 Billion to keep Google as the default search engine on iPhones.
The report claims that Google also tried to encourage users to adopt their Chrome browser to keep users away from Apple’s Safari.
The report shows the importance of search to Google, which accounts for more than half of its advertising revenue. Also notable is Google’s understanding of defaults and the effect they can have on user behaviour.
As new AI products challenge traditional tech devices, apps and user interfaces, it remains to be seen if users retain Google as their default choice for searching the web.
